Finishing 2025 with a Plushie Free Pattern! PLUS a new series: What can you sew on a Bernette 05 Academy Sewing Machine?

Grateful for this week after Christmas, giving us a chance to breathe!

As 2025 winds down, I am looking forward to the exciting things that are coming in 2026!

Christmas gift making included my designing a new plushie pattern inspired by Bluey.

Introducing the Paradiso Sweet Creature!!

Shown here in 2 fabric choices: Cotton Woven & Faux Fur.

PS: New Blog Series "What can be sewn on a Bernette 05 Academy sewing machine?

Plushies I tell you!!

I used fabric scraps from my stash and vintage buttons for the eyes!

AND I added a helpful carrying strap to the back!

The Sweet Creature Pattern Pieces Pattern PDF!

The Black Mink Faux Fur was quite easy to sew on the Bernette 05 Academy,
and to keep it simple I did add any features, except for using vintage buttons the eyes.

The other 2 Sweet Creatures were made with quilting cottons and batiks.   It is nice to have an assortment of 3 shades of a color for the different body parts OR 2 shades + wht/off-wht fabric.

Fabric & Notion Requirements:
(Fabric #'s are on pattern pieces)
-Body, Strap & Nose Tip: Darker shaded Fat Quarter (FQ) fabric + FQ of Muslin = Fabric #1
-Ears & Face Shading:  medium shaded fabric scraps + muslin for each ear piece = Fabric # 2
-Eyes, Nose & Belly:  lighter fabric scraps = Fabric #3

******Please remember fabric selection is completely up to the maker, these are only suggestions!!

-*HINT: Recycle pillow stuffing for the plushie & ear stuffing (I save all my pillows)

-Buttons for the eyes. I love the idea of mismatching buttons that are the same color!

*HINT: I only cut the body, the ears, and the strap for the Mink FF Sweet Creature, because I knew the pink eyes would be expressive enough!  And I wanted to recipient to enjoy the softness!

*HINT: Please do not skip using muslin in this pattern. Muslin is a great stabilizer in projects like this, and gives the sweet creatures a LUX feeling!

Here are the fabric combos below.

I used the blk/red for the main body, red/white for the ears and face shading,
and gold/wht for the eyes, nose and belly!

Love the print for the body, dark blue for the face shading and ears,
light lavender for the belly, eyes, and belly!

*HINT: Before starting construction please press/iron your cotton fabric pieces.

Strap construction:
Iron in half lengthwise, then tuck each raw edge into the center and iron again to finish.
Sew on each side of the strap with a 1/8" SA (seam allowance).
Cut strap to 9" long.

Special Construction on Faux Fur (FF) Strap:
This polyester fabric cannot be ironed.  Draw a chalk-line on the WS of the strap.
Then pin both side raw edges to the center line.

Make sure the pins stick out on the RS of the strap(notice the pins are on the outside of the strap below).

Last fold the edges together and secure with clips in between the pins as shown.

Since it is hard to see where the FF edges are, stitch down the center of the strap with a zig zag stitch!

Body Construction:
Cut the Body, 2 fabric, 2 muslin.
Lay fabric right side (RS) up layered on top of the muslin.
Pin at center top and sides so that fabric + muslin act as one.

Next place the face shading & the belly in place on only 1 body,
this will become the front of the Sweet Creature!
Use a zig zag stitch to secure pieces in place. On the face shading,
some of it will need to be trimmed even with the body.

Place & pin nose tip on nose, and secure in place with a zig zag stitch.

Feel free to play with eye & nose placement!
Next pin eyes & secure with zig zag stitch.
Then pin & secure the nose.

Ear Construction:
To support the ears use muslin as a stabilizer.
Layer the 2 ear piece (RS together), and add muslin to each side for 4 layers total.
Sew the 2 sides of each ear, trim at the point, then turn RS out.
Topstitch with a 1/8" SA around the sides.
The ears are now stuffed with poly stuffing.  Recycle old pillow stuffing.
Fill the ears, and baste the ear openings shut with a 1/4" SA.

This is a sample of how the ears will look like.
And nose placement.

After sewing eyes on, pull all threads to the back and
knot by hand as shown below.
Clip threads to finish.

Next attach buttons for eyes.
Hand sewing tip for buttons:  Cut a 4' length of thread, fold in half.
Thread the ends into the needle, and pull to even 4 threads and knot.
Proceed to sew on each button with 5 stitches to provide 20 threads strong.
Knot to secure each eye!

Next pin ears in place as shown below.
(this pattern has flexibility and the ears can be pinned in the other way if desired,
just audition the ears at the top of the head before pinning and sewing.
Hint: Pin so that the pin is pinned thru to the back.
Then sewing the ears on will not be blocked by pins on top.

Tack the ears with a 1/4" SA.
It is a tight sew.

Then pin the strap as shown, about a 1/4" from the ear edge on each side.

Sew the strap on with a 1/4" SA.

On the back of the front, mark the 3/4" square.
This will be sewn to box the bottom.
Mark the 2 bottom corners.

Next pin the front body to the front body.

Leave a  open space around 3" on one side to turn plushie to RS out once it has been sewn.

When sewing, sew up to the corners and backstitch,
so that only the corner is cut out and no stitching is cut as shown below.
Sew with 3/8" SA. then cut both corners out.

Next, refold the corner to butt the seams to each other,
then close the ends by sewing a 3/8" SA.
Make sure to clip just the SA around the top curve,
so that the plushie turns easier when turning inside out.

This looks great and makes sure the ears will stand up.
Stuff the plushie, make sure to stuff the corners and the top first to make sure all areas get filled.

Once the plushie has enough stuffing, then the opening will be pinned as shown.
Make sure the pins go into the plushie, then they cannot prick while the plushie is being stitched up.
Use the ladder stitch to close the opening.

I mean...come on, they are soo cute.
And they can look like a pup or a kittie, even a bunny.
Don't for get to give it a really cute name!!

May 2026 be a wonderful year for all!
xoxo,
Cheryl of Paradiso
