Anyone Crossbody-Sling Bag Sew-A-Long, Day 3, Finish Her Up!

We will now assembling all the pieces to finish the Anyone Bag!

The following lay-out will help determine getting the interior pockets on the backside of the bag, so it is easier to retrieve items out of the bag while it is being worn.

The zipper is in the middle of the final bag construction.
Each side of the zip will be sandwiched & sewn between an exterior & a lining.
If the bag is carried on the right, the right of the zip is the bag front,
And the left is the back.

It is important to have the zipper at the front of the bag, so it is easier to unzip from front to back.
If the bag is carried on the right and the exterior pocket is to be on,
the front of the bag, then the pieces on the right of the zip are sewn on the right side of the zip.
Everything to the left of the zip is sewn to the left side of the zip
And if the bag is to be carried on the right,
then the pockets should be on the back of the bag for easy access.
The layout below is for the bag to be carried on the right, exterior pocket is on the front of the bag.

Lay out the zip as you like it, then lay the pieces on each side as it works best for you.
Visualize where the pockets will work best for you!

From the layout above the Exterior is sewn to the right side of the zip.

Placement to sew the zip.
Make sure there is 1/2" from the zip on each side. Clip into place.

Clip the zip in place, turn this piece so the zip is on the right.
The left side of the foot should be flush to the zip teeth.
Needle is all the way left, stitch length at 2.5, center of machine foot should be on the edge of the lining
Sew the exterior to the zip.
As this seam is being sewn, it will be necessary to stop
and move the zip and continue to sewing the seam.

This is how it will look after sewing the zip to the exterior.
Next sandwich the zip with the lining.
Line up the lining to be even with the exterior.

Here is how it will look to sandwich the zip by sewing the lining on.

Here is how it will look to sandwich the zip by sewing the lining on.

After sandwiching the zip on one side.

It is important to flip the zip to the right side,
as seen here.
Notice how the lining & the exterior are laying.

With the zip right side up, and the seam allowance towards
the pleather, topstitch the pleather with a 1/8" sa.
Make sure the sa is being caught in this seam

It is at this point the tabs will be basted at the center of the pleather top side.
I did not take pictures
It is easy to baste the tabs now before anything else is sewn together.
If using a grommet tab be aware of which side of the grommet is facing the exterior.
The front of the grommet needs to be based to the front of the bag.
Find the center of the tab and center of the pleather edge and match those centers.
With the side of the foot flush/even with the grommet/pleather edge and
needle all the way over to that edge, use a 3.5 stitch length.
Start in the middle and sew over one edge and backstitch to over the back edge,
then back to the middle.
****tip, make stitch length less then 1.0 and stitch a few stitches to lock it in.

I did do a mock up of a ring tab, and how it should look.
The first picture is with a 2.5" long piece,
2nd picture has a 3" piece.
Imagine the line that bisects the clip is the edge of the pleather.
The foot needs to be flush with this line.
With the needle all the way over, the seam allowance is around 3/16".
Remember to start sewing with the foot on top of the tab to baste.
And when the bag side is being sewn, the seam should barely catch the tab ends
on top of each other.  This fold is my design to lessen bulk.
& is present in many of my patterns!

2.5" ring tab, I like the smaller tab as it will be closer to the bag body.

But the 3" tab is easier to sew in!

Now it is time to add the other exterior & lining sides to the zipper.
Putting right sides together (exteriors) and sewing to the other side of the zip.

Sewing the 2nd exterior to the zip. Zip head has been moved to finish sewing this seam.

Now adding the 2nd lining and sandwiching the zip.

Sewing this last seam to finish attaching the linings & the exteriors to the zipper.
Do not forget to topstitch the pleather (next to the zip) with a 1/8" seam allowance.
Do not catch the lining in this topstitch, it should be visible and not folded under the exterior.

Great shot of the tabs as the exterior & the lining of the bag are clipped/pinned into place.
After sewing the last "to-zip" seam

This is the entire bag.
The exteriors are clipped together.
Match the seams of the pleather ends to each other as shown above.
The clips can"box" the pleather ends to make sure the seams match on point.
The linings are pinned together.
Look at the bottom of the lining.  There are a pin about 1" from the corner.
There is a seam sewn from the corner to those pins only.
This leaves a generous opening to turn the bag right side out!

Use a 2.5 stitch length & 3/8" seam allowance!
Just to keep it straight, start sewing at the bottom of the lining,
and then around the entire bag. Pause where the tabs are and
backstitch with a 2.0 stitch length over the tabs to really secure those tabs in place!!

Backstitch over those tabs!

I did not (forgot) to take pics of sewing the corners.
This is the first time I have cut the corners before construction!
And this method of cutting the corners gives accuracy!
I was able to find an example of sewing corners.
On this example there is only one seam, which is opened.
But the Anyone will have 2 seams that must be matched,
but the seam allowances are folded to opposite sides to reduce bulk.
Match up the seams and then fold the corner flat and clip in place.
Sew with a 2.5 stitch length, and a 3/8" seam allowance.
This is another seam that can be stitched twice for strength.

This is another angle of how the corner will look when sewn together.
It is nice to have the edges cut to make sure all edges match up before sewing!

It is now time to turn the bag right side out!
Reach through the lining opening to grab the bottom of the exterior
and bring it through the opening. Gently pull the bag out to the right side.
Make sure to push out all the corners.
But leave the opening exposed.
Turn down one side of the opening 1/4" & pin in place.
Then repeat for the other side.
Sew the opening closed with a 1/8" seam allowance.
Then push the lining into the bag, seat it into the exterior bottom.

After lining opening is sewn closed,
there is one more step to keep lining in place.
LAST Step is the most important.
This is an important step because if not done the zipper will roll into the bag
because the lining will pull it down.
And it does not look right!

Pin inside the bag to hold the lining in place as shown below.
Make sure the pins are going down so not to stab yo fingers!
Specifically pin the lining to the fleece of the bag, inside of the bag and above the outside seam between the 2 exterior pieces.

Next match the thread to the lining, this thread will be in the bobbin.

Then match the thread to your fabric below the pleather.
I chose the off white to match the original color of the canvas.
This is the top thread.

Here is stay stitching on the back, use a 2.5-3.0 stitch length.
Start as close as possible to the side seam, and sew up to the side seam.
Do not catch any side seam allowance inside the bag.
The foot center line is just a smidge over so the needle will
stitch in the ditch.  This stitching will not be visible to most people.

Still stitching in the ditch.

Another shot of stitching in the ditch.

Here is how the stitch in the ditch looks when finished!

The bag is finished!
Here is how the grommet tabs in the back of the bag look!

And the front!!

Tip: Use run a candle over the teeth of the zip to condition the teeth & for a smoother zip!
The Anyone bag is finished!!
